Fringe 2014 at Geva: DIAGHILESQUE Mixes Classical Ballet and Burlesque

Diaghilesque-580x580For the 3rd consecutive year, the Fielding Nextstage will be the venue for Geva’s line-up of shows for the First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival. KineticArchitecture make their Geva Theatre Center debut in this year’s Fringe with Diaghilesque.

The lavish and profound gems of Diaghilev’s Ballet Russe are given a Post Modern/Burlesque treatment by KineticArchitecture.  Artistic Director Arrie Davidson/Faux Pas le Fae is a Dancer, Choreographer, and Transgender Performance Artist described by nytheater.com as “the naughty lovechild of Modern Dance and a Burlesque Carnival.”Diaghilesque features a return to the stage of Arrie’s Les Sylphides with Koryn Wicks dancing the title role in which she is the manhandled rape victim of a patriarchal kingdom. Other highlights are Faux’s Le Spectre de la Rose with an original dance film by Juliet Jeske and a cast of intoxicated ball goers which lose all inhibition as well as aScheherazade in which the women of the harem would risk dying in the desert for freedom. Pulcinella’s frolic and give all the permission to dream of primal sensuality, while the world premiere of The Firebird Pas de Deux challenges societal mating rituals. KineticArchitecture members Koryn Wicks, Lisa Clementi, Diane Skerbec, Meghann Bronson, Amy Thurmond and Dara Swisher have cultivated a Buster Keaton meets Butoh style of raw physicality and lush imagery described in Time Out NY as “dance, gravity-defying gymnastics, yoga and S & M.”

Diaghilesque is recommended for mature audiences.
