It’s no secret that actor Daniel Craig is soon going to retire his tuxedo and give up his medium dry martinis, shaken not stirred. He’s played the iconic role since 2006’s Casino Royale and will close out the 15 year stint as 007 in the upcoming film No Time to Die, written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
The question on everyone’s lips for years has been: who is going to take up the 007 mantle after Daniel Craig? Speculations have been wild – it seems as though every time a British actor takes the lead role in some action film or other, rumors start to spread like rapid fire that they are surely going to be the next James Bond.
Below is a list of 10 actors rumored to be the next 007 and some of their most notable acting credits. It is far from a complete list. If we’re going to be honest, while diversity has become more of a priority in Hollywood, many of those who are rumored to be next in line to play Bond are, unsurprisingly, white. This list is purposefully inclusive and reflective of the global majority.
Scroll down to the end of the list to select who YOUR pick is to be the next 007. Or you can even add your own option to the mix!
Where you may recognize him from: there are honestly too many films to choose from! Idris has got over 100 actor credits under his belt so far. Not only that, but he’s a rapper/singer/songwriter/DJ as well. His most notable roles include Heimdall in the Avengers franchise, John Luther in the Luther tv series, and Macavity in the Cats film. He’s been a ‘next Bond’ fan favorite for a while and no one would be shocked, or disappointed, if he were selected.
Where you may recognize him from: another fan favorite in the ever growing list of who will be the next 007. Tom Hardy’s lead role credits are too many to count and yet the actor still maintains an under the radar persona – a perfect duplicity for Bond. You may recognize him as Bane in The Dark Night Rises, Eddie Brock/Venom in Venom, Mad Max in Mad Max, John Fitzgerald in The Revenant…the list goes on and on and on.
Where you may recognize him from: by now, Daniel Kaluuya has become a household name. From his unforgettable role of Chris Washington in Get Out to his most recent portrayal of Chairman Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah, Daniel is well on his way to having a Denzel Washington-esque career. With his acting ability and the ways in which he is able to subvert an audiences expectations, there’s no doubt that he’d make a brilliant Bond.
Where you may recognize him from: Edgar is one of those actors whose consistent career makes him instantly recognizable, even if you may not know exactly what it was you saw him in. Most recently, he played Detective Joe Mendoza in HBO’s The Undoing. You may also know him as Gianni Versace in American Crime Story. Why would he make an ideal next James Bond? Well, he speaks 5 languages! International, indeed.
Where you may recognize him from: rapper turned actor Riz Ahmed has starred in his fair share of tv shows but you may recognize him as Bodhi Rook in Rogue One, the villain Carlton Drake/Riot in Venom or, most recently, as Ruben in Sound of Metal, which landed him an Oscar nomination. His versatility and ability to stretch himself in the roles he plays is the exact kind of elasticity James Bond requires.
Where you may recognize him from: Game of Thrones may have put Richard Madden on the map, but he certainly is not a one hit wonder. Since his unfortunate demise on the show, he’s gone on to have lead roles both in film and tv. He was the Prince in Cinderella, John Reid in Rocketman, and will be starring as Ikaris in the upcoming Eternals film, a continuation of the Marvel Avengers franchise. It’s his role as David Budd in the Bodyguard tv series that makes him Bond material – a wounded war vet navigating his own PTSD and the politics of those he’s meant to serve.
Where you may recognize him from: Oscar Isaac’s versatility shines through in his filmography. He’s known for immersing himself in his roles and being able to adapt into various genres – thrillers, tragicomedies, action. A chameleon, like James Bond. You may know him as Poe Dameron in the Star Wars franchise, Llewyn Davis in Inside Llewyn Davis or as the voice of Gomez Addams in The Addams Family animated films.
Where you may recognize him from: Shonda Rhimes’ newest successful venture Bridgerton threw Regé-Jean into super stardom very quickly. People everywhere fell in love with Simon Basset and his broody, smoldering eyes. A rake if there ever was one, dismissing infatuated women left and right, only to make them fall more in love. Remind you of anyone?
Where you may recognize him from: Henry’s stardom is relatively new but steadily on the rise after his role as Nick Young in Crazy Rich Asians and Tom in Last Christmas. He exudes a suave, wealthy yet effortless air and – like 007 – fits seamlessly into any soiree.
Where you may recognize him from: our very own The Real James Bond…Was Dominican! Let’s be honest, when Chris completes his Bond ensemble, our vote was already cast.
